The first of our 2 pieces by one of Montenegro’s most beloved artists, the mesmerising, Todor Vučković.
Todor Vučković was born in 1944 in Podgorica. He has been a working artist since 1968. His first solo exhibition was held in Titograd in 1965 at the Art Pavilion. He has held many solo and group exhibitions in his home country of Montenegro and internationally. Namely in: New York, Parma, San Remo, Venice, Florence, Bologna, San Marino, Montecatini Terme, Chiasso, Gothenburg, Belgrade, Podgorica, Budva, Cetinje, Vienna, Zaandam, Bergen, Horn, and others.
Art historian Petrica Duletić who wrote the foreword to the catalog of Vučković's 2018 retrospective show writes:
"The main features of Todor Vučković's painting are: the interweaving of dream and reality, reality and fiction, the concrete and the abstract, the conscious and the unconscious, the possible and the desired.
At one point, Vučković is close to a kind of surrealistic and oneiric painting. He reinterprets reality in the rhythm of his own intimate and unrestricted subjective reactions to the impulses of the world and time in which he operates. His paintings are the result of a true conviction that through his own pictorial creation, one can propose and create a new world, an aesthetically designed space. In the cycle of newer works, he approaches the visual expression with a resolved experiential stance, in continuity with earlier manners, bounded forms, and reduced colour palette. The romantically playful reality but geometrically organised, is the original contradiction of this artistic oeuvre. The dominance of creating a new space within the space reveals the concept of an original constructivist impulse, merging into a different qualitative visuality."
