Dry Pastel on paper. 50cm x 40cm. (Framed)
We are fortunate to exhibit the earliest known artwork by contemporary genius Robert Jevnik.
Robert Jevnik, or 'Robi', began his creative journey by transferring the beauties of nature onto paper. Jevnik hails from the idyllic Slovenian village of Dolenja Stara, situated under Gorjanci. Observing his environment, the Gorjanci hills on one side and vast fields on the other, was the fundamental catalyst that led him into the world of art. He always wanted to pour the colours of his native landscapes onto paper, wood, or canvas in the form of photographs or paintings. Owing to the absence of a camera, he devoted himself to developing the latter art form from an early age. Various illustrated encyclopedias, comics, and Disney illustrations also significantly influenced this decision. Later, in the upper grades of primary school, he was inspired by some great historical artists, such as Leonardo da Vinci as a master of anatomy, Rembrandt with his dramatic use of light, Michelangelo as a sculptor and painter, and Dali with his untamed imagination. It didn't take long for his efforts to pay off, as he sold his first landscape paintings in dry pastel technique after a solo exhibition during the 8th grade of primary school - this exhibition featured the Šentjernej Memorial piece above.
Presently, he creates mostly at night and in winter when he can be alone with his ideas without a deadline. His practice is constantly changing, becoming more extensive, and is best expressed in his works. He identifies most with painting. In his motifs, he likes to capture all the beauties of nature, often in composition with the female figure and various animals. He says he practically never knows when a work is finished. For him, a painting is theoretically finished when there is nothing more to add, and he is satisfied with his work. Jevnik notes on his artistic perspectives,
"The artistic view of the world is immaculate. Every paradox, every contradiction and every chaos represents the perfection and order of natural laws. We live with nature, accepting everything around us. I live calmly and simply because only then can I create."
