Fatmire Nura Zeka is a contemporary multi-media artist from Kosova whose work spans drawing, painting, videography, photography, sculpture, installation, performance, and writing. A graduate of the prestigious Royal College of Art, her artistic practice is deeply inspired by her experiences growing up in Kosovo, reflecting both her pre-war and post-war realities while addressing present-day issues.
Once an asylum seeker, Fatmire consistently draws from her lived experiences to highlight broader societal concerns, including xenophobia and misogyny. Incorporating material culture and confronting overconsumption, she transforms everyday objects and detritus into traces of memories that fuel her creative process. She says of her process,
’’My intention is not for my art to be political. It begins with the poetic and of its own accord, is political. Indeed, my art responds poetically to political and social injustices. These injustices, for me, are the negligence of developing new artists, particularly female artists. My passion for fashion and performance inspires me to draw musical fantasies in charcoal using oil paint, allowing them to evolve. I like to explore the theme of appearance versus reality in my art, interpreting my surroundings differently and presenting them in a surrealistic way’’
Fatmire’s urge to capture fleeting experiences also delivers her a skilled hand with the camera. Through photographic and video documentation, she creates evocative stills that resonate as standalone works of art.
